Peter Strong is Head of Drug Discovery at RespiVert. Pete is a biochemistry graduate from the University of York and has a PhD from the Biochemistry Department of Leeds University. Pete joined Glaxo in 1980 as a Senior Biochemist, but retrained as a pharmacologist while working on a number of Drug Discovery programmes targeting cardiovascular or respiratory diseases. In 1995, following the formation of GlaxoWellcome, Pete was appointed to a leadership role within the respiratory diseases therapy area.
When GSK was formed in 2001, Peter had a pivotal role in the inception of the GSK Respiratory Diseases and Inflammatory Diseases Centre of Excellence for Drug Discovery (ri CEDD). Following completion of set-up work, his focus was on the progression of individual assets through exploratory development and in shaping the overall portfolio.
In this latter role, Pete was involved wit a number of initiatives which were designed to enhance GSK’s ability to develop novel inhaled medicines.
In 2004 Pete left GSK and became an independent consultant, working for a number of VCs, biotech and small to medium-sized Pharma organisations. During this period of consulting, Pete became progressively more interested in the opportunities working in a small-company working environment provided. Ultimately Pete pursued the opportunity to re-establish his working relationship with Garth and become a co-founder of Respivert Ltd.
